What Is a Timeframe?

A timeframe defines the length of time represented by one bar or candlestick on a chart. For example, on a 1-hour chart, each candle summarizes one hour of market data according to the chart’s session and timezone settings.

Why Timeframe Matters

Changing the timeframe changes the amount of information compressed into each candle. A lower timeframe can reveal more short-term detail but also more market noise. A higher timeframe can show broader structure while hiding smaller fluctuations.

Timeframe is not the same as trading style. A swing trader can use lower timeframes for execution, and a day trader can use higher timeframes for context.

Key Terms

Timeframe, candle, bar, intraday, market noise, higher timeframe, lower timeframe.
