OHLC

OHLC stands for Open, High, Low, and Close. These four values summarize the price behavior of an instrument during a defined period.

  • Open: the opening price for the period.
  • High: the highest traded price during the period.
  • Low: the lowest traded price during the period.
  • Close: the closing price for the period.

OHLC data is the foundation of many bar and candlestick charts. The same market can produce different OHLC values depending on the timeframe and the chart’s session/timezone settings.

Example

If a 1-hour candle has an Open of 100, High of 104, Low of 99, and Close of 103, we know the four key prices for that one-hour period, but not the exact sequence in which every transaction occurred.
