Scalping is a short-duration trading style in which we seek to capture relatively small price movements through frequent, tightly managed trades. The holding period can range from seconds to minutes, although the exact duration depends on the strategy and market.
What Scalping Requires
Scalping places strong demands on execution quality, liquidity, spread awareness and decision speed. Because individual targets are small, transaction costs and slippage can represent a large percentage of the expected edge. A strategy that looks attractive before costs may disappear after realistic execution assumptions.
Timeframes and Context
Lower timeframes such as 1-minute or 5-minute charts are often used for scalping, but the timeframe alone does not define the style. We still need a clear setup, entry condition, invalidation rule and exit logic. A fast chart without a structured process simply produces faster decisions, not better ones.
Practical Example
Suppose our setup seeks a 0.4% move while the realistic combined cost of spread, commissions and slippage is 0.15%. The remaining gross edge is much smaller than the headline target suggests. If execution deteriorates during volatile periods, the expected value can fall further.
Trader Application
Before choosing scalping, we evaluate whether the market provides sufficient liquidity and whether our broker and platform can execute consistently. We also define a maximum number of trades, daily loss limits and conditions under which we stop trading. Scalping is not simply “trading faster”; it is a distinct operating environment with a different cost and execution profile.
