Cryptocurrency markets are markets for digital assets that use cryptographic systems and distributed ledger technology. The market includes many different assets with very different structures, liquidity profiles and use cases. We should therefore avoid treating “crypto” as one homogeneous instrument.
How the Market Differs
Many crypto markets operate continuously rather than following the traditional weekday schedule of major stock exchanges. Liquidity is fragmented across venues, and volatility can be substantially higher for individual tokens than for large established assets. Price gaps can also occur between venues or during periods of rapid repricing.
What Moves Prices?
Prices can react to changes in demand, liquidity, market sentiment, protocol developments, regulation, macroeconomic conditions and movements in major crypto assets. The structure of a particular token also matters: supply rules, issuance, unlocks and utility can affect its market behavior.
Practical Example
If a major crypto asset experiences a sharp decline, smaller tokens may fall more strongly because liquidity is thinner and risk appetite deteriorates. A trader who only watches the individual chart may miss the broader market regime affecting the position.
Trader Application
Before trading crypto, we identify the exact asset and venue, check liquidity and spread, understand the trading hours, and consider custody or platform risk where relevant. High volatility can create opportunity, but it also increases the speed at which an invalid trade can become a large loss.
Key Terms
