Trendlines

A trendline is a charton drawn line used to visualize a directional relationship between significant price points. It can help us describe the slope and structure of a move.

Drawing a Trendline

In an upward market structure, a trendline may connect relevant higher lows. In a downward structure, it may connect relevant lower highs. The usefulness of a trendline depends on which price points we choose and how consistently the market respects the relationship.

A trendline is an analytical tool, not a physical barrier. Price can move through it without automatically invalidating the broader market structure.

Practical Use

Trendlines can help us identify acceleration, deceleration, potential breaks, and areas that deserve closer analysis. We should avoid drawing many arbitrary lines simply to make the chart appear more predictive.

Key Terms

Trendline, slope, higher low, lower high, break, market structure.
