How does a professional trader use it?
Stock Screener – the soul of Finviz
The screener allows you to search for stocks based on hundreds of criteria.
For example:
- Price > 20 and 50-day moving average
- Relative Volume > 2
- High ATR
- Float < 50 million
- Gap Up > 5%
- Earnings today or tomorrow
- RSI above 30 or 70
- Insider buying
This means instead of looking through 6,000 stocks, you might only review 15–20. This saves hours of time every day.
Heatmap – where is the money flowing?
This is perhaps its best-known feature.
You can see on a single image:
- Which sector is strong
- Which sector is weak
- Which stock is driving the index
- How large the movement is
For example, if NVIDIA is +5%, AMD is +4%, and Broadcom is +3%, then there is momentum in the AI/chip sector.
If all banks are in the red, it might not be worth looking for long positions in bank stocks.
This is excellent for “top-down” analysis.
Swing trade setups
For example:
- Near 52-week high
- Higher highs
- Price above 200 SMA
- EPS growth
- Sales growth
It works very well for trend-following strategies.
News
For each ticker, you can see:
- Earnings
- Analyst upgrades/downgrades
- Insider transactions
- SEC filings
This way, you don’t need to open multiple different websites.
Insider Trading
Many people watch for when:
- The CEO buys
- The CFO buys
- Multiple executives buy at the same time
It doesn’t automatically mean the price will go up, but it is highly useful information.

A typical trader’s daily routine:
- They check the Heatmap.
- They identify the strongest sectors.
- They filter for the right stocks using the Screener.
- They analyze the charts.
- They check the news.
- They transfer the candidates to the watchlist of their trading platform, such as TradingView or Meta Trader 5.
